How do we ensure that our jewellery are as durable as they can be? The process includes several rounds of testing, from each pendant down to the smallest of hardware - which includes all the jumprings, chains and clasps.
The process, though long, is simple - we source for as many hardware samples from different suppliers and put them through 3 tests, the water test, scratch test and wear test.
Water Test
During the water test, we immerse the new hardware into, you guessed it - water, for approximately 7 days or more. Thereafter, we conduct a preliminary check to ensure that no rusting, discolouration etc. occurs, before proceeding to the scratch test.
Here are some IG story archives we dug up!
Scratch Test
After the water test, samples are removed from water and lightly scratched using sharp objects (penknives etc.) to simulate general wear-and-tear that occurs. Samples are then put back into water and left aside for another 5-7 days.
The rationale behind this is simple. Many jewellery products nowadays are marketed as gold-plated jewellery, boasting of genuine gold plated over the metal. Gold is no doubt one of the best materials to be used in jewellery. However, in many cases, once the gold plating wears off, it reveals the base metal, of which might be prone to rusting.
Hence, the scratch test is meant to simulate wear-and-tear to the best of our abilities, ensuring that our jewellery remains durable even if they brush against sharp objects or are scratched. Our aim is to ensure that the base metal underneath all the protective gold/silver coating is made up of durable materials - such as stainless steel or 925 sterling silver.
Wear Test
Last but not least, most products undergo a wear test, where we personally wear the products for a period of 5-7 days, through daily and extreme conditions such as sleep, shower, sweat and exercise. Not too much exercise though, cause we’re lazy people.
Due to time and manpower constraints, however, we are simply unable to allocate enough time for wear tests for all items - but this is something we’ll definitely work on if we are lucky enough to get more hands on deck!
After all samples have passed all 3 tests, they’ll finally get a stamp of approval! Now they can be used and be scheduled for our launches. Curious about the next step? Stay tuned for our next blog post to see how your favourite Fromedith products get launched, coming your way next week!
Modern Jewellery for your Everyday
The Fromedith team believes wholeheartedly in affordable jewellery that lasts.
In 2022, we made the decision to switch over to stainless steel or 925 sterling silver for most of our jewellery pieces, as opposed to gold-plated alloy jewellery. With this switch, you can be rest assured that your jewellery is safe for prolonged wear and exposure to water.
